SeniorNavigator is a public/private partnership with the Commonwealth of Virginia, Virginia Department for the Aging, local governments, and hundreds of private sector partners. SeniorNavigator—where community and technology come together.Salute to Caregivers
Did you know that one in six Americans – and one in five Virginians -- is providing care to a relative, friend, or spouse age 50 and older? In 2004, a study estimated that there are over 740,000 family caregivers in Virginia.
Whether you are helping to care for a loved one who is one town or county away or across the country, there are survival strategies to make things a little easier. Long-distance caregivers are generally defined as living more than one hour from the loved one needing assistance. Estimates of the number of long-distance caregivers in the U.S. who are caring for an older relative range from 5.1 to nearly 7 million.
This Long Distance Caregiver Handbook serves as a roadmap for those new to the challenges of caring from afar. Here is a guide for those of you in the "Sandwich Generation", taking care of children and an older relative at the same time.
Being a caregiver can be fulfilling but extremely challenging. Remember to take steps to cope with stress. You owe it to yourself to stay as healthy and balanced as possible. We salute caregivers for their dedication, selflessness and tender loving care.
A special thank you to our Partners—whose commitment to community and technology allows us to reach all Virginians, with and without internet access, and offer new tools on SeniorNavigator.

No Wrong Door No Wrong Door for long-term care is currently being piloted in Virginia to assist seniors and adults with disabilities in determining eligibility and easily accessing the services that best fit their needs. With the Virginia Department for the Aging (VDA) leading the public sector and SeniorNavigator leading the private sector, this public/private initiative is designed to drastically improve access to, and delivery of community-based services.
