SeniorNavigator—where community and technology come together.March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month
It is estimated by the American Cancer Society that approximately 150,00 new cases of colorectal cancer are diagnosed each year and 50,000 people died from the disease last year. The risk of developing colorectal cancer increases with age. Men and women over the age of 50 should begin being screened if they haven't already done so. Screening tests are crucial in early diagnosis and treatment.
Do you think that you can put off screening tests? You are not alone, many people believe certain myths that prevent them from getting tested. They think you have to have symptoms to need testing-you don't. They think testing will be painful-not really so. Others think it is a condition that hits older men-it's not, in fact, an equal number of men and women are diagnosed with the disease.
Worried about the cost of screening? Good news—colorectal cancer screening costs are covered by Medicare and most commercial health insurance plans, usually starting at age 50 for the most common tests. Check with your plan for details.
